Dracula? Truth Or Legend?


Day I
Bucharest / 80 km
Arrival to Otopeni international airport. Meet the guide. Departure to Snagov. Along the way, learn about Romania and its people, and also discover the truths, the legends, the myths and the magic of Dracula / Vlad / Transylvania. Explore the mysterious, secluded island which is the home of the Snagov Monastery. You will cross a moat by rowboat to arrive at Vlad's tomb. The richly dressed corpse, exhumed in 1931, had been decapitated. In the place of a human skeleton was the bone of an animal. The frescos and artwork surrounding the grave are a sight to behold. Transfer to Bucharest, the capital of Romania (first mentioned by this name in a document signed by Prince Vlad Dracula himself in the year 1459). Spend your first night in Bucharest.

Day II
Bucharest ? Sibiu / 320 km
Breakfast. You cross the vast Danubian plain to the foothills of the Carpathian's, then to the Gorge of the river Arges, guarded by the Fortress of Poienari ? rebuilt by Vlad Dracula in 1459 with the hands of traitor boyars. In 1462, prince Vlad, his wife and a few soldiers took refuge here, besieged by the Ottomans. Vlad sent for help in the neighboring village of Aref, across the hill. His wife did not believe escape was possible and threw herself into the river. Under cover of night, the Arefeans managed to take the prince to safety, across the high Carpathians, into Transylvania. On the crest, Vlad made them owners of 16 mountains (a document issued 100 years later confirms the donation). Optional climb to the ruins of fortress Poienari (1456 steps). Lunch in Curtea de Arges. Continue the trip through Ramnicu Valcea and entry to the beautiful Old Valley. Stop for a visit of Cozia monastery, founded by the Basarabs, one of the masterpieces of architecture and medieval paintings of Walachie. Dinner and accommodation in Sibiu.

Day III
Sibiu ? Piatra Fantanele / 240 km
Breakfast. Depart to Sighisoara, the best preserved medieval town in Europe. You have a walking tour of the walled city of Sighisoara, the Clock tower ? the symbol of the town, the Tanners? Tower, the Tinkers? Tower, the Goldsmiths? Tower, the Butchers Tower and not only; the stair passage built in 1662, the Church on the Hill ? one of the oldest churches in Romania (1345), the birth house of Vlad Dracul ? the oldest civilian stone building of the town ? a very nice restaurant these days; here you take lunch. Departure through Targu Mures, Reghin, Bistrita and ascend the Borgo Pass. You have the unique occasion to admire the Carpathian gorges with its rivers, trees, swamps and mountains, at the sunset time. Arriving to Piatra Fantanele village; dinner and accommodation to Dracula Castle hotel. Here you?ll meet the Count Dracula!

Day IV
Piatra Fantanele ? Brasov/ 405 km
Breakfast. After a scary night in Count Dracula?s Castle departure to Vatra Dornei and you turn south through Bistrita Valley until passing near by the Mountain Spring Lake, dam formed on the Bistrita, behind a dam more than 120 meters in height, a real artificial mountain; 35 kms long ?the sea behind Ceahlau?; Bicaz Gorges, one of the most impressive monuments of nature in Romania, declared monument of nature and forms a complex preserve, geological, floristic and faunistic; Red Lake (the biggest natural dam lake in Romania; it took birth in 1837 by the collapse of a huge tract of soil from the north eastern side of the Killer Mountain; this ?alpine sea? in miniature, is a joy of the travelers who cone to admire it; the area surrounding the lake was declared floristic and faunistic preserve). Dinner and accommodation in Brasov.

Day V
Brasov ? Bucharest / 220 km
Breakfast. In the morning you explore Brasov, one of three major centers in Transylvania established in Vlad's time. Sightseeing includes the "Black Church". Continuation with the famous Castle of Bran. Bran Castle is a dark, gloomy edifice towering over a bed of stone, gruesome yet beautiful as a preserved fortress. The castle, built in 1377, is an important national monument and landmark of Transylvania, due not only to the majestic beauty of the castle and the uncanny landscape, but also to the legend of Count Dracula. In the park area, there is an open-air gypsy bazaar where you will find the best selection of Dracula dolls, shirts, souvenirs & memorabilia in Transylvania. Lunch in Sinaia ? ?Pearl of the Carpathians? ? a resort situated at 125 km from Bucharest. Visit of the Peles Castle, one of the most important museums which combine various architectural styles, notably elements of the German and gothic Renaissance. It represents invaluable collections of art and furniture. Peles Castle was the final resting place for several Romanian monarchs including King Carol I, King Ferdinand and Queen Maria. In the evening arrival in Bucharest. Dinner and accommodation.

Day VI
Bucharest / 50 km
Breakfast. Visit the Palace of the Parliament erected between 1984 and 1989; until 1990 was known as the ?House of the People?. It has 6,000 rooms including hundreds of studies and dozens of reception and conference rooms for scientific, political and cultural sessions. After 1989 Revolution it became the headquarters of the Romanian Parliament and since 1994 it has housed the International Conference Centre. On the way to the airport we stop for a visit of the Village Museum, an area of more than 17 ha; opened in 1936 it contains peasant households with their complete inventory, from pieces of furniture to household tools and traditional technology installations, illustrating the village universe in all regions of Romania. Transfer to the airport.
