Surroundings Of Bucharest


Mogosoaia
Commune, 15 km north-west of Bucharest. Here in 1702 on the shore of a beautiful lake, ruling prince Constantin Brancoveanu built an elegant palace combining elements of Romanian traditional architecture and those of Italian architecture. The Palace is an architectural monument having the fa硤e dominated by traditional staircase balconies and by the arcades and columns with capitals, specific to the "Brancovenesc" (Brancovan) style. The building has an overwhelming simplicity of high refinement, its main fa硤e being mirrored in the waters of the lake. The former kitchen, other ancillary buildings, as well as a church, complete this architectural complex, surrounded by a park with age-old trees. Today the visitor can find interesting art exhibitions, cultural events etc.

Snagov Monastery
Situated on an island you have to take a boat to arrive to Vlad Tepes's tomb.

Baneasa
A forest situated at 10 km from the city, on the road to Ploiesti. It is one of the beautiful relaxation places around the capital; a special attraction point is the Zoo.

Caldarusani Monastery
The monastery, built in 1638 under the guidance of Walachia?s prince Matei Basarab (1632-1654), gained recognition during the 18th century as home to one of Romania's most distinguished icon painting schools. The 17 year old Nicolae Grigorescu spent some months at the monastery, painting several icons for the church.

Cernica Monastery
In the 1800's, the Cernica Monastery flourished under the guidance of St. Calinic. The church St. Gheorghe was built between 1831-1838, a library and seminary opened and a school for religious painting set up. The graves of Romanian painter Ion Tuculescu, and writer Gala Galaction, are in the cemetery, in front of St. Gheorghe's Church.
